How to Enable XMP for Faster RAM Performance

Learn how to enable XMP or EXPO in your BIOS, check your current RAM speed, and make sure your memory is running at the performance you paid for.

If you have bought faster RAM for your gaming PC or desktop computer, there is a good chance it is not actually running at its advertised speed.

For example, you might have purchased 3200MHz, 3600MHz or even faster RAM, but your computer may initially run it at a slower default speed.

This is where XMP comes in.

XMP is a setting inside your computer’s BIOS that allows compatible RAM to automatically use the speed and timings it was designed for. Enabling it is usually very simple and can give your PC a small but worthwhile performance improvement.

This guide will explain what XMP is, how to check your current RAM speed and how to enable it.

What is XMP?

XMP stands for Extreme Memory Profile.

RAM manufacturers normally test their memory at a certain speed and save these settings as a profile on the RAM itself.

However, when you first install the RAM, your motherboard will often use a slower standard speed to make sure the computer starts reliably.

For example, a DDR4 kit advertised as 3200MHz might initially run at 2133MHz, 2400MHz or 2666MHz.

Enabling XMP tells the motherboard to use the faster settings supplied by the RAM manufacturer.

You normally do not need to manually change voltages, timings or other advanced settings.

Why should I enable XMP?

Enabling XMP allows you to actually use the performance you paid for when buying faster RAM.

Faster memory can improve performance in areas such as:

  • Gaming
  • General computer responsiveness
  • CPU-heavy applications
  • Video editing and rendering
  • File compression
  • Some integrated graphics performance

The difference will vary depending on your computer.

You shouldn’t expect XMP to suddenly make a slow PC incredibly fast, but on some systems, especially gaming computers, the difference between slow default memory and correctly configured RAM can be noticeable.

It is essentially a free performance improvement if your RAM supports it and a no brainer if you can enable (and it causes no stability issues)

1. Check your current RAM speed

Before changing anything, you can check what speed your RAM is currently running at.

In Windows 11 or Windows 10:

  1. Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to open Task Manager. (or type Task Manager in the Windows search bar)
  2. Click Performance.
  3. Select Memory.
  4. Look for Speed.

You should see something similar to:

Speed: 3200 MT/s

Compare this with the speed advertised for your RAM.

For example, if you purchased 3200MHz RAM but Task Manager shows around 2133 or 2400, XMP may not currently be enabled.

MHz or MT/s?

You may notice that Windows now sometimes displays RAM speed as MT/s rather than MHz.

Don’t worry about the difference for this guide.

If your RAM was sold as DDR4-3200, seeing approximately 3200 MT/s in Windows means it is running at the expected speed.

2. Restart your computer and enter the BIOS

To enable XMP you need to enter your motherboard’s BIOS or UEFI settings.

Restart the computer and repeatedly press the BIOS key while the computer is starting.

Common BIOS keys include:

  • Delete (DEL)
  • F2
  • F10
  • F12

For most custom-built desktop PCs, Delete (DEL) or F2 is normally the correct key.

You usually need to start pressing the key immediately after turning the computer on.

Once successful you should see the motherboard’s BIOS screen instead of Windows.

3. Find the XMP setting

Once inside the BIOS, look for a setting called something similar to:

  • XMP
  • Extreme Memory Profile
  • A-XMP
  • DOCP
  • EXPO

Where this setting appears depends on your motherboard.

On many gaming motherboards it appears directly on the main BIOS screen.

On others you may need to open an overclocking or memory section.

Common menu names include:

  • AI Tweaker
  • OC
  • Overclocking
  • Tweaker
  • Extreme Tweaker
  • Advanced Memory Settings

Don’t worry about the word overclocking. You do not need to manually overclock anything for this guide.

4. Enable the memory profile

Once you find the XMP setting, it will normally be set to something like:

Disabled

Change this to:

XMP Profile 1

or simply:

Enabled

Some RAM kits may give you more than one profile.

If you are unsure which one to use, Profile 1 is normally the best option.

You may then notice the displayed RAM speed change.

For example:

2133MHz → 3200MHz

This is what we want.

What about AMD EXPO?

Newer AMD systems using DDR5 memory may use something called EXPO instead of XMP.

EXPO performs essentially the same job — it loads the recommended faster memory settings stored on your RAM.

If your motherboard shows EXPO Profile 1, select that instead.

Some AMD motherboards, particularly older ones, may also call the setting DOCP.

5. Save the BIOS settings

Once XMP or EXPO has been enabled, you need to save the change.

Most BIOS systems use:

F10 – Save & Exit

Your computer should show you a list of the settings that are being changed.

Check that the RAM or memory frequency is the main change and then confirm.

The computer will restart.

Your PC may take slightly longer to start

Don’t panic if the first startup after enabling XMP takes slightly longer than normal.

Some motherboards perform memory training after the memory settings have changed.

The computer may even restart once or twice.

Allow it to finish.

6. Check the RAM speed again

Once Windows has loaded, open Task Manager again:

CTRL + SHIFT + ESC → Performance → Memory

Check the speed.

For example, if you have DDR4-3200 RAM you should now see approximately:

3200 MT/s

If you have DDR5-6000 RAM you may see:

6000 MT/s

If the correct speed is shown, XMP has successfully been enabled.

Is enabling XMP safe?

For most compatible systems, yes.

XMP and EXPO profiles are settings provided specifically for that RAM kit.

However, memory speeds above the basic DDR specification are technically a form of memory overclocking, so stability can depend on several things including:

  • Your motherboard
  • Your processor
  • The amount of RAM installed
  • The number of RAM sticks
  • The memory kit itself

Most systems will work perfectly with the supplied profile, but occasionally a computer may become unstable.

What if my PC won’t start after enabling XMP?

If the computer will not start properly, continuously restarts or becomes unstable after enabling XMP, don’t keep changing random BIOS settings.

First give the computer a few minutes as the motherboard may be training the memory.

If it still doesn’t boot, you may need to reset the BIOS settings using Clear CMOS.

This will return the motherboard to its default settings.

You can then either leave XMP disabled or try a slightly lower memory speed.

Problems are more likely when using:

  • Four RAM sticks
  • Very high-speed RAM
  • Mixed RAM kits
  • Older processors
  • RAM that isn’t officially supported by the motherboard

Should I use four RAM sticks with XMP?

You can, but running four RAM sticks can sometimes place more load on the CPU’s memory controller than using two.

For example, a computer might run:

2 x 16GB at 3600MHz

perfectly, but struggle to run:

4 x 16GB at 3600MHz

This doesn’t necessarily mean the RAM is faulty.

You may need to use a slightly lower memory speed to maintain stability.

For most people building a new computer, using two matching RAM sticks is normally the simplest configuration.

Can I mix different RAM kits?

It may work, but we generally recommend avoiding it where possible.

Even if two RAM kits have the same advertised speed and capacity, they may have different:

  • Memory chips
  • Timings
  • Voltages
  • XMP profiles

This can cause XMP to fail or make the computer unstable.

A single matched RAM kit is preferable.

Does XMP improve gaming performance?

It can.

The improvement depends heavily on the game, processor and graphics card.

CPU-limited games can benefit more from faster memory, while GPU-limited games may show little difference.

The biggest mistake is buying something like DDR4-3600 or DDR5-6000 memory and unknowingly leaving it running at a much slower default speed.

If you’ve paid for faster RAM, it is worth checking that it is actually running correctly.

In most cases you simply need to:

  1. Check your current RAM speed.
  2. Enter the BIOS.
  3. Find XMP, EXPO, DOCP or A-XMP.

  6. Check the RAM speed again in Windows.
